Tighter rules needed to chill air-conditioner thefts 01/20/2011

One day you're basking in the cool comfort of your living room, and the next, you're sweating on the phone with your insurance agent, hoping the deductible covers it. And you know it won't. You sweat more.

The way thieves cannibalize air conditioners to get that extremely valuable $20 worth of copper forces the victim to replace rather than repair the unit. It might be easier to tape a $20 bill to the unit with a note begging for mercy.

Residents, churches and contractors reported about $660,000 worth of metal stolen last year just in unincorporated Lake County. Arrests were made in only 8 percent of the 217 cases. And no wonder. These cases are almost impossible to solve.

That's why lawmakers are looking for better nets to catch the thieves, who hightail it to the nearest scrap-metal dealer for an instant payout, then cruise away to spend the windfall.

Transformers: Mother lode

Here's what it's come to: Thieves in Lake have actually pulled down telephone poles to get the transformers, with their mother lode of copper wire. Good grief. Are we living in Haiti?

On Tuesday, County Commissioner Leslie Campione plans to ask her colleagues to have county attorneys draw up an ordinance to tighten the rules on scrap-metal sellers.

Yes, scrap-metal dealers already are subject to rules requiring them to get a drivers license from the seller and take pictures of what they're buying. Yes, more restrictions will create more paperwork. But commissioners should ignore the howling and just do it.

The biggest reason is that neighboring governments such as Orlando and Orange County already have ordinances that create a nearly "cashless" system. The seller of the scrap metal must provide a physical address to which a check can be sent or a bank account into which an electronic payment can be made. ....Full Story

Samsung.....plans to invest $10 million dollars to ramp up manufacturing of air conditioners. 

"We are looking at 37 percent growth in split air conditioners during 2011," he said. 

During 2010, three million air conditioners were sold in India and this is expected to go up to 3.6 million during 2011. Samsung, which is number two in the air conditioner market, sold 650,000 units last year and has targeted 800,000 units this year.

A growing trend in South Florida has hit Margate in recent months as home- and business-owners discover an empty slab of concrete where their air conditioner once rested, offering burning anger to match the sometimes brutal heat.

Within the city, it had until now been abandoned or empty homes that were missing the units but last week three businesses in a shopping center on State Road 7 went air-less.

David Rich, owner of the Rich Law Firm, said his company's two 4-ton A / C units were stolen overnight, causing what he expects to be about an $8,000 cost to replace the old Freon handlers with the new systems required by the state.

During 2006, Daikin Europe N.V. will underline its lead in air conditioning technology with its introduction to the European market of ‘Ururu Sarara’ – the world’s first split air conditioning system capable of humidifying and dehumidifying room air without the need for an external water source.

The new heat pump system, comprising indoor unit (FTXR-E) and outdoor unit (RXR-E) is available in 3 sizes with nominal capacities of 2.8, 4.2 and 5.0kW, COPs of 5.00, 4.00 and 3.42 (cooling) and 5.14, 4.32 and 3.97 (heating). 


All units in the range have ‘A’ class Energy Label ratings, among the highest on the European market. Ururu Sarara combines a number of innovative features that offer the end user complete control of the temperature, humidity and ventilation of his immediate environment on a round the year basis.

Humidifying (in Japanese: ‘Ururu’)
Correct humidity levels play a major role towards achieving internal room comfort conditions. A relative humidity (RH) of 50% at a temperature 22°C enables an occupant to feel warm, whereas an RH of 20% at 28°C can leave an occupant feeling cold. In addition, the correct level of humidity can not only improve room comfort, it can also prevent dry skin and sore throats. 


Humidification is achieved during the heating mode via a built-in element on the outdoor unit, which extracts moisture from the surrounding air without any need for an external water source. After its transfer to the indoor unit, the humidified air is discharged evenly throughout the room space, thereby avoiding air stagnation at ceiling and dryness at floor levels. 


Dehumidifying (in Japanese: ‘Sarara’) 
In as much as humidification has beneficial effects on comfort levels, so does dehumidification. During the summer a high degree of ambient air humidity, even at moderate temperatures, can make a room feel hot and stuffy. 


Ururu Sarara however, reduces indoor humidity without affecting the room temperature by mixing dry cool air with warm air to produce comfortable dry air (reheating dehumidifying). 


This feature prevents overcooling and will be appreciated particularly by individuals sensitive to cold. If the indoor temperature becomes too high, Ururu Sarara reduces the humidity level by also reducing the temperature (cooling dehumidifying). 


Ventilation
Ururu Sarara is unique among residential air conditioning units in that it enables a 26m²  room to be ventilated with fresh air in less than 2 hours without the need for windows to be opened. Furthermore, the incoming air temperature is adjusted to the required level, thereby avoiding any heat losses. Ventilation can also be initiated while the occupants are away from the house and, since the supply fan is located on the outdoor unit, the ventilation process is silent.   


Air purification
Incoming outdoor air is purified in two stages – initially in the outdoor unit and again in the indoor unit. Exhaust gases and unpleasant odours are decomposed and removed from the outdoor air before it passes to the indoor unit where it is filtered of dust and pollen and  purified further of odours in a photocatalytic filter. Finally, it is subjected to treatment in the  ‘Flash Streamer’ – patented by Daikin and incorporated in its latest air purifiers – which breaks down any remaining formaldehyde, viruses and moulds etc.  


Other features
The system possesses a number of other user friendly features. Its ‘moisturizing operation mode’ creates a particularly skin friendly environment by combining a high RH, a comfortable airflow pattern and the emission of vitamins and hyaluronic acid. A ‘breeze cooling airflow’ function meanwhile, enables a room to feel cool, even at relatively high temperature settings by varying the airflow direction to simulate the effect of a pleasantly cool breeze. Also, comfort during sleep is increased by the ‘comfort sleep’ mode, which adapts room temperature to match night time fluctuations in bodily temperature. This is achieved by lowering the room temperature by 2°C over a 3 hour period and then slowly returning it to the original setting 1 hour prior to wake up time. Another interesting feature is the ‘mould shock operation’: this is a 3 hour drop in humidity which prevents undesirable mould formation within the room.
Ururu Sarara is controlled via an easy to read and use hand held remote controller, which displays room humidity and temperature levels in all system operating modes and functions via simple push button operation.

Tax Credits for Energy Efficient Air Conditioning In Your Home 05/24/2009

The government often tries to influence our behavior through taxes. The tax credit for new energy efficient cooling systems in our homes is one example.

As part of the provisions in the Energy Policy Act 2005, homeowners are entitled to claim tax credits on use of a few energy saving items. They include the use of energy saving windows, doors, roofing, furnace and boiler, water heater and air conditioner. As energy becomes scarcer by the day, it is essential to conserve as much energy as possible. The government, by way of giving tax credits, also encourages using alternate sources of energy.

Using energy efficient air conditioning systems is one of the items that qualify for tax credit. Individuals who install this type of air conditioner are eligible for a tax credit of up to $300. The models that qualify are obviously costlier than the ordinary ones. However, this calculation would show that it is advisable to install a new energy saving air conditioner. Even if you save just $10 a month on average by way of electricity bills it comes to $120 for a year. Add to that the tax credit of $300, your net saving is $420. This amount should be good enough to prod a homeowner into buying an energy efficient air-conditioner.

Of course, not all air conditioners are eligible for a tax credit. Even, not all Energy Star air conditioners qualify, only some do. Very efficient central air conditioners qualify for the tax credit if they meet the following criteria:

1. The Energy Efficiency Ratio has to be 13.0 or higher (in some states its 12.5).

2. Certified technician needs to install the equipment.

3. The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) has to be 15.

SEER measures performance throughout the season and EER measures performance on a very hot day. Central Air conditioning systems must meet the standards set by the Consortium of Energy Efficiency (CEE). The specifications for each state vary slightly.

The tax credit for energy efficient cooling systems in our home is just another step in saving money on both your energy bill and taxes. Since tax credits are reduced from the actual amount of tax you owe, not your gross income, you should strongly consider taking advantage of this one.

Comment by James: On the other hand, you can easily very high energy efficient mini split air conditioners (greater than SEER 15) that work just as well and will greatly help lower your energy bills at the same time.

Air-con alternative cuts energy use by 94% 05/13/2009

Independent tests have revealed that the Coolhouse air cooling system can reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption by 94%, compared to standard air-conditioning.

The Coolhouse system uses normal drainage pipes buried two metres underground to deliver cool air into the house via an under-floor void. Fresh air is delivered to the ground floor daytime living areas through vents situated above the skirting boards. Other vital components of a Coolhouse building are the use of sun-dried adobe or clay bricks for the inner walls and inner skin of the outer walls, and fibre-reinforced insulation on the outer walls. The windows are made of solar controlled low-E glass.

Independent tests carried out by London-based consultants Faber Maunsell showed a 12-degree reduction in internal temperatures in a villa where temperatures outside were 37 degrees centigrade. They also showed that Coolhouse reduced relative humidity levels by up to 30%, relieving unhealthy black mould and dampness caused by condensation.

In addition, the fact that the air is cooled from outside rather than recirculated is believed to have health benefits, eliminating the issues of dry eyes and respiratory tract problems sometimes associated with spending time in air-conditioned buildings.

Air Cooler vs Aircon 04/20/2009

If you are debating the evaporative(air cooler) v reverse cycle aircon (split unit), consider these things:
1. Evaporative only works in dry heat (ie coastal, Sydney, tropical it doesn't work) because it passes air through water to cool it down. If there is already high humidity, the air is saturated and doesn't cool down.
2. If you choose reverse cycle, choose an inverter as it is the most energy efficicent - but don't turn it on and off as you then negate its energy efficiency.
3. Don't consider your summer needs seperately from your winter ones - for the cost of installation, you're getting heating and cooling with reverse cycle.
4. Don't ever consider installing air con until you have what has been mentioned already in this blog - good quality insulation and window furnishings.
5. Always ask whether the company installing uses sub-contractors or not. It's definitely my preference for the more accountable employees (or business owner tradie him/herself) as opposed to fly-by-night subbies. Some subbies are good, but I can't say I've had good experiences with air con sub-contractors.
6. If you're buying ducted air con, get one with zones that can be turned on or off, and close off the un-used zones (eg, only start cooling bedrooms half an hour before bedtime).
Evaporative seems to be going out of fashion even in the areas it is effective I don't know whether Legionnaire's is more prevalent or not with the "swamp box" (evap), but mozzies are!
